Plastic bags & bottles banned in the Khumbu region
Kathmandu: At a time when Nepal faces blames for being ineffective against pollution in the Everest region, a drastic decision to ban the use of plastics bags and bottles- below 30 microns, has come from the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Tuesday which will be effective from 1 January 2020.
The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-home to the world’s highest peak Everest decided to keep the Khumbu region free from plastic bags and bottles in the wake of increasing environmental pollution, being harmful to human health and climate, said Ganesh Ghimire, Chief Administrative Officer of the rural municipality.
Every year more than 50,000 tourists visit the Khumbu region to watch the stunning view of snowcapped Himalayan peaks. Ghimire also informed that appropriate fines will be levied on those who breach these rules related to the ban on the use of plastic bags because failure to protect the environment in the region will lead to a catastrophic outcome.
