Kathmandu: Under the second phase of renovation, the Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport is about to be closed daily for the maintenance and construction of the airport’s runway, the runway centerline light, the link road connecting the taxiway and the runway.
The airport will be closed from 11 pm to 6.30 am from Sunday onwards up to December 31 according to the airport Office. According to Rajkumar Chhetri, the General Manager of the airport office, though the airport is going to be closed for 7 hours daily, the flight of the corporation won’t be affected.
Starting from Thursday, the state-owned Nepal Airlines Corporation has started flights to Osaka, Japan. Chhetri said that the airport will be open three days a week for 30 minutes despite the maintenance work.
There are Osaka flights three days a week, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from Tribhuvan International Airport. The Civil Aviation Authority Nepal (CAAN) has already allowed the contracting company to open the airport during the flight (2 am to 2.30 am) targeting Osaka flights.
Under the first phase, the runway of the airport was repaired from March 31 to June 30. The repair work was done by shutting down the airport for 10 hours daily from 10 pm to 8 am.
The airport repair work has been initiated by collecting Rs. 1,000 from passengers for the airport development fee. China National Aero Technology International Engineering, the government company of China, has been given the responsibility of repairing the runway at a cost of 4 billion 780 million rupees.
