Poon Hill: A tantalizing viewpoint in Nepal
Today we are taking you on a spectacular journey to one of the tantalizing Poon Hill viewpoints in Nepal.
For a beautiful sunrise sight, stunning views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri peaks, the Poon Hill is unparalleled.
Day 1
Our plan is to reach Ulleri by taking the route from Kathmandu to Pokhara.
It takes only 25 minutes to land in Pokhara airport by flight from Kathmandu. A road journey to Pokhara takes nearly 6 hours.
We reach Hille village by hiking for 20 minutes. The road is not paved.
There are nearly one dozen hotels here. After lunch, we resume our journey.
A Gurung village is seen gradually. Ulleri village arrives where dominant indigenous Magars’ population thrives.
Day 2
We start hiking uphill from Ulleri to reach Ghorepani.
The roads are made up of stones. We reach Nangethati (2430 m) via an uphill road.
We reach Ghorepani (2860m) after lunch.
Most of the tourists usually stay at Ghorepani and hike towards Poon hill in the night time as no hotels are found at Poon hill.
Day 3
We get up at 3 a.m and move towards Poon Hill.
We reach the Poon Hill after nearly one hour’s walk.
Many of the tourists have already arrived here. The beautiful sight of sunrise begins.
How was it named Poon Hill?
Previously this hill was a grazing ground for Magar community and was known as Langtang hill.
A late ex-serviceman – Major Tek Bahadur Pun since 1970-71 had insistently struggled to promote this hill as a tourist spot.
The hill was named Poon Hill to recognize his contributions and dedication.
