Kathmandu: Nepal’s indigenous new year known as Nepal Sambat 1141 has commenced from today .
The New year-Nepal Sambat is usually observed by the Newar community amidst various programs including holding mass rallies in Kathmandu valley and across the nation.
However, due to Covid-19 fear crowded programs have been postponed according to the observers of Nepal Sambat 1141.
This new indigenous year -Nepal Sambat had started in the past after Shankhadhar Sakhwa exempted the people of Nepal from the debt during the rule of Lichchhavi King Raghavdev.
The Nepal Sambat calendar was replaced forcibly by Bikram Sambat during the rule of late King Prithivi Narayan Shah.
It may be recalled that the Bikram Sambat calendar was adopted into Nepali calendar from Indian calendar Bikram Sambat which was named after the powerful Indian King known as Bikaramditya who had ruled in India for a long time in the Indian history.
In the subsequent course of time the governments in Nepal continued to follow the Bikram Sambat by recognizing it as Nepali calendar.
