Kathmandu: As usual, May 29th, 2021 is the day already set aside for the Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon, the highest marathon on earth, which is held annually on this day in the Everest region as a tradition.
The Everest Marathon marks and commemorates the first successful ascent of Everest by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary on May 29, 1953.
One of the most essential features of Everest Marathon is trekking to the Everest Base Camp before starting the race for Marathon. The journey begins with a fascinating and exciting flight from Kathmandu to Luka airport from where the trekking begins to reach the Khumbu region, the gateway to Mt Everest.
The participants of the Marathon can enjoy the unique scenic beauty of Sagarmatha National Park, Namche Bazaar, and Tengboche Monastery too.
The journey to the Everest region also takes the participants through the Kalapatthar at 5,545 m (18,200 ft), from the summit of which the participants can observe the panoramic glimpses of the icy Himalayan peaks, ranges, and glaciers.
Mt Everest is at a stone’s throw distance from Kalapathar.
