Deserted Thamel due to Covid-19 fear
Kathmandu: Thamel- the main tourist hub of the capital city Kathmandu- nowadays is totally deserted due to the spreading spree of Covid-19.
The main tourism hotspot inside Kathmandu valley has come to an almost standstill with the second wave of Covid-19 and its new variant in Nepal. The Thamel had remained locked down for nearly eight months last year following the emergent fear of the deadly contagion.
This year too, this tourist hotspot has come to a grinding halt since the third week of April after the emergence of the second wave of the deadly virus.
Foreign tourists could not arrive in Nepal due to the closure of all international flights in the last year and this year after prohibitory orders were imposed to curb the deadly virus.
The few tourists who had arrived in Nepal had returned to their respective countries via chartered planes which makes the Thamel area look deserted in the absence of tourists these days.
It is estimated that around 60000 people are running their business in this Thamel area but the area does not have a promising look these days says Vice-Chair of Thamel Tourism Development Council, Bhabiswor Sharma.
