CNN:4000 people climbed Mt Everest so far
Kathmandu: According to American news agency CNN at least 4000 mountaineers from around the world have already climbed the world’s highest peak Mt Everest which lies in Nepal.
The earlier Everest expeditions were initiated by the British climbers. Following this it was British climber Mallory and Irvine who started expedition to Everest in 1924. They attempted to climb the Everest with modified oxygen container, but their expedition remained shrouded in mystery whether they were able to climb atop Mt Everest or not.
The reports said that both Mallory and Irvine were last seen at the 26,000ft of Everest, it was not clear if they were returning from the summit or heading to the summit.
Legends say that when Mallory was on the way to Mt Everest he happened to visit one of the monasteries that lay beneath the Everest Base Camp where the monastery monk warned him against stepping on the top of the world’s highest peak as it is the sacred holy place which should not be tainted. However, Mallory continued his expedition and died on the way.
Finally, on 29th May 1953, as a part of the ninth British expedition, Edmund Hillary and Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay Sherpa achieved the first success of scaling the Everest. Tenzing later on took Indian citizenship and migrated to Indian area of Darjeeling.
Mt Everest is around 50-60 million years old and it was named Everest after George Everest, a former Surveyor General of India who measured its height for the first time. It was declared the highest peak in the world in 1856.
Until it was named and measured by George Everest, Kangchenjunga was considered the highest peak in the world.
Tibetan people call this mountain by the name of “Qomolongma” which means holy mother and in Nepal it is called by the name of “Sagarmatha” which refers to a “head in the sky’.
In 2022 only a joint Everest measurement team of Nepal and China found a new height of the Everest and declared its new height to be 8.848.86m (29,031.69ft).
