Pasang: In the Shadow of Everest
Kathmandu: Pasang Lhamu Sherpa hailed from the Sherpa community and was not much educated to deal with worldly affairs until one day she realized and determined to vanquish the highest peak of the world -Mt Everest- at the instigation of her father and mother’s words that instilled in her the firm determination to embark upon the Everest expedition which she did on April 22, 1993.
Until she achieved this legendary heroic feat representing the Nepali women and Sherpa community, she was just a housewife and did not think of going outside her family life.
However, one day when her father told her that she could not join her father in his expeditions, she instantly took a vow to climb Everest at any cost no matter what harsh conditions she might have to undergo.
To achieve her big dream of reaching the top of Everest she had to go through rigorous mountaineering training with her peers. Despite the training being very tough, Pasang tolerated all hardship and in 1993 she made her dreams come true by climbing Everest as the first Nepal woman to do so in the history of mountaineering.
It was her indomitable courage, obsession, and immovable determination that pushed her forward to achieve such a great feat to be an exemplary women climber in Nepal and across the world. It was unfortunate that though she could succeed in climbing Everest, while descending she lost her life due to bad weather conditions. The weather was bad even while ascending too.
Today, Pasang Sherpa still relives in a video made in her memory which is known as “Pasang: In the Shadow of Everest” at https://pasangmovie.com. She was indeed a legendary Nepali women climber who has given the inspiration of climbing to millions of women across the world.
