236 Dead, 19 Still Missing Due to Floods and Landslides in Nepal
In the aftermath of continuous heavy rainfall, floods, and landslides across Nepal have claimed the lives of 236 people. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the victims include 114 men, 32 women, and 19 children. Nineteen individuals are still missing, and over ten thousand people have been affected by the disaster. Currently, 165 injured people are receiving medical treatment.
The relentless rain on September 27 and 28 triggered widespread flooding and landslides across the country. The ministry reported that rescue operations have successfully saved 17,000 individuals from affected areas, 910 of whom were airlifted to safety by helicopters.
The estimated cost of repairing and reconstructing the damaged physical infrastructure exceeds NPR 25 billion. Key highways, including those connecting to the capital, Kathmandu, remain obstructed. The Prithvi Highway, a major route, has suffered significant damage due to landslides at several points.
Despite efforts to build alternative roads and fill potholes to ease transportation, government officials express doubt that transportation will fully resume before the upcoming Dashain festival.
The disaster has completely destroyed 4,667 homes, with another 5,310 partially damaged. A total of 16,243 families have been affected, and 10,807 people have been displaced. Additionally, the floods and landslides have damaged 11 hydropower plants, 6 irrigation projects, 10 highways, 44 suspension bridges, 96 schools, and 66 health centers, as reported by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
